GTA: Vice City – The Definitive Edition revamps the legendary 1986 era neon-and-glitter city, but this time with more refined yet ultimately loyal to the original style game. The game keeps addicted players in its core loop, which is an awesome mix of chaotic sandbox freedom and tightly woven cinematic narrative where you, as ex-con Tommy Vercetti, execute street crime and gradually take over the city’s underworld via a chain of missions that vary from shooting street-level gangsters to scheming property acquisitions. This is the absolute heart of the game that remains unchanged. Still, the visual and quality-of-life concessions, such as modernized controls, are the most noticeable things among the changes.

Everything is still in the game of the previous era – cruising by art deco landmarks in a stolen sports car to the sounds of Flash FM, your favorite synth-pop radio station, getting into wild shootouts with rival gangs where you have to spray bullets without even aiming, and always trying to keep the game balanced between the addicting emergent chaos of wanting this 6-star level and the calm that the story brings.

The developers have done a great job in keeping the game that was the benchmark of the genre in the past, where players don’t get the thrill just by finishing the missions but also by fully playing the role of a kingpin in a clandestine, living, and breathing 80s era continuation of The Simpsons, while the humid air, vibrant color palette, and so iconic soundtrack that are experienced together make the whole thing feel like one scene from a stylish and unpredictable crime epic.
