Mafia II: Definitive Edition presents the timeless classic of crime in its final and most refined form. It tells the intense, character-driven story of Vito Scaletta with improved graphics, all the previous downloadable content, and a new level of visual detail that allows the audience to feel the frozen streets of Empire Bay more closely than ever. The gameplay has not changed from the original: it is still a slow, cinematic experience which gives one the role of Vito, a Sicilian immigrant who, coming back from the war, makes a living through petty crime. Here, the main gameplay is an excellent example of a linear, mission-based story, which takes place over more than ten years in a fantastic fictional city called Empire Bay, which is a mix of post-war New York and Chicago Vito’s progression from doing small-time crimes and robberies to becoming the most powerful is illustrated by these scenes, which are similar to the gangster film: a diner robbery, a prison break, and a shootout in a snow-covered cemetery. This version of the game brings forward this experience by restoring aeroplanes, high-resolution textures, better lighting and shadow effects, and longer draw distances, which enhance the look of the city’s period-perfect architecture, such as the towering art-deco skyscrapers and the gritty industrial docks.

The game highlights that the impeccable attention to period detail is now even more spectacular. The player cruises through the rain-wet streets in an elegant, period-accurate car with real swing and doo-wop music on the radio. At the same time, the upgraded graphics make the changing seasons from the golden colours of fall to the cold, bone-chilling snow of winter feel almost touchable. Although the combat retains a stoic, cover-based approach, every punch and bullet has a raw feeling, and there is a pleasingly savage hand-to-hand fighting system that shows the era’s gang violence.
