Assassin’s Creed Valhalla puts a new spin on the series’ open-world RPG formula by telling an intense story of Viking settlement and conquest, where gameplay is basically a big and varied cycle of raiding, building, and diplomacy against the backdrop of the divided kingdoms of Dark Ages England. As Eivor, a Viking raider, you discover two main progression paths, each with its own unique abilities. On one side, you develop your traditional combat skills. On the other hand, you gain “social stealth” abilities, which are mainly based on the new Blending mechanic that lets Eivor blend into crowds or wear disguises.

The main gameplay loop is the setting up and growing of Ravensthorpe, your settlement, which is your base of operations, where, after raids and world events, you get building upgrades, new NPCs, and storylines, thus making each victory feel like a real contribution to your clan’s wealth and power. The settlement upgrading is the direct result of the famous Raid mechanic through which you take your longship crew to attack Saxon monasteries and fortresses. These lead to big, intense fights with open-combat being mixed with the players’ performing different tasks, such as opening doors and grabbing chests of loot. The world becomes one’s oyster as the player is free to unearth a plethora of “Mysteries,” “Wealth,” and “Artefacts,” turning exploration into discovery.
