Forza Horizon 3 dramatically changed the player’s position from a rising star to the outright boss of the Horizon Festival, with Australia as the ecologically diverse and huge backdrop. This “Boss” concept was automatically integrated with the gameplay through the innovative “Festival Site” management system. As the owner, your moves—racing to victory, uncovering beauty spots, and attracting more fans—earned you credits not only for cars but also for wisely buying and upgrading new festival locations scattered from the beach of Surfers Paradise to the dusty outback.

Every single new site unlock was like a new play trigger that allowed new event types to be introduced, the radio station’s range to broaden, and more drivatars and activities to flow into that area, thus making the world appear to be more and more alive due to your managerial decisions. Such a powerful feeling of possession, along with an interesting meta-goal, was created here: you were not only doing the festival; however, the continental domination of it was by you, the automotive playground with the ultimate having been made available by you according to your own tastes.

Apart from control, the game universe exploded with the most unexpected and unprecedented creative freedom. One of the best examples was the “Blueprint” system, which was groundbreaking. With this option, users were able to change the details of the race down to almost every aspect—the time of the day, weather, cars that can be used, and even the checkpoints on the track—and then make them available to anybody else. This effect made the game no longer just a series of events but a never-ending, player-driven show where you could, for example, play against your friends a race at midnight during a thunderstorm or a like-old-times muscle car race on the beach at sunrise.

Moreover, the idea of the game as a sandbox also applied to the list of cars, which was characterized by the most extreme kinds of vehicles. It allowed you to drive through the jungle in a buggy, climb a mountain in a rally car, or take your hypercar out on the highway—all of this with the new “Hoonigan” car pack that is getting vehicles that are made just for crazy stunts into the game. Horizon 3 was more of a game of building your own, unique automotive disaster highlight reel than a championship competition.
