Forza Horizon 2 is the gameplay, which is basically a bright and lively version of the drive time that we all love and remember, and it is the new “Open World Road Trip” concept that really gives this game its strength and character. Horizon 2 is not just telling a story with its world; it is directly involving the world of southern Europe in the gameplay, thus the player gets continuously drawn in to explore the game further and further. The major point of the game is the beautiful and very successful interaction of the beginning and the competition. Instead of choosing from a given list of events, you are following the sunset, finding your opponents’ brake lights and thus automatically entering a point-to-point race, etc, or going down the road of the asphalt to find a hidden vintage barn which is in the middle of a grove of olive trees.

The picture is further complemented by the addition of dynamic weather thr-machine and a full day/night thr-cycle, making the landscape look like a living and breathing entity. Hence, a race that began, for instance, on a dry and sun-baked coast at dusk might be ending in heavy rain on a wet and muddy mountain pass under the cover of night; in this case, you need to change your driving line and technique accordingly and in real-time. All these movements happening in our senses and the environment are the main reasons why we do not feel that the journeys between events are the same, and that makes the simple travel a core, rewarding gameplay pillar.

Even though the game seems to be a party in full swing, it still carries the intimate layer model under its hood, which is almost a perfect combination of the sim-root aspects of the Forza Motorsport series and the accessible arcade-style exhilaration. Working the game brilliantly rewards skills and courage; however, it does not punish the casual players, which is made possible by the rewind feature and the adjustable driving assists.
