WWE​‍​‌‍​‍‌ 2K20 was a release that ran into serious troubles and, as a result of significant technical shortcomings that affected the gameplay experience fundamentally, it was a failure despite its ambitions. In an effort to expand the well-known simulation base, the game suffers from a new graphics engine that brings a multitude of bugs, including those occasions where the physics go wild and the characters get broken, the game crashes quite often, and in some cases, the pathfinding during entrances cannot be done. The “2K Originals” DLC packs, which were much advertised, brought to the table weird, otherworldly storylines, but the basic mechanics seemed to be less than adequate; the old carry and payback systems were less responsive, and the reversal window was unforgiving and inconsistent, hence the natural flow of a match was getting interrupted.

In this game, the usage of the new features like mixed-gender tag teams was certainly positive; nevertheless, the fanbase was rather quickly able to notice that these new features were getting overshadowed by graphical glitches and AI malfunctions, which in turn led to the loss of authenticity of the WWE simulation. One of the major content areas in WWE 2K20 was the narrative-driven “MyCareer” mode, which for the first time featured a dual-protagonist story following custom characters Red and Tre. The movie-like quest from the independent circuit to WWE incorporated male and female superstars’ stories, and the main theme was relationships and personal struggles.

Besides, the creation suite was still powerful and deep, enabling limitless customization of superstars, arenas, and entrances, and the “WWE Universe” mode kept up with its sandbox-style storytelling. Unfortunately, these modes were also vulnerable to the overall instability of the game, as there were instances of corrupted save files and bugs in progression. To a great extent, the workers who played the game thought that these constant issues turned WWE 2K20 into a frustrating experience, which did not reach the level of the previous installments’ legacy and was the reason why the series went on a break the next ​‍​‌‍​‍‌year.
