WWE 2K15 made changes to the franchise that were huge, and it really felt like a fresh start after the series had gone arcade for so long. One of the key features was the chain wrestling system, which brought a totally different gameplay style to the game as the games get more and more realistic. Matches were now started with a mini-game, a sort of rock-paper-scissors, where the winner gets control of the game, trying to simulate the real feeling of the different tests of strength and technique found in a wrestling match. A long, reckless run and constantly using strong moves, as a consequence of the new gameplay, would definitely leave a wrestler’s energy bar empty, and therefore, the character would be weak.

Also, the controls were changed to require more accurate inputs. The reversal system became a limited resource where you could only have a small number of reversal tokens at a time; thus, players would be forced to think carefully about which moves of the enemy they would counter instead of just spamming a reversal button. The visual aspect of the game underwent a drastic change as well, and in conjunction with this newly introduced mechanical depth, WWE 2K15 featured highly detailed character models with realistic sweat and skin textures, lighting of arenas that made the whole presentation look like it was done by a real broadcast of the wrestling match.

WWE 2K15 shifted its focus from solely in-ring mechanics to largely narrative-driven experiences. These were aimed to compensate for the lesser content offering of the title compared to the previous one. The main “2K Showcase” mode was a flagship that recounted the feud of the two stars, Punk vs. Cena. Using real footage and setting specific goals that recreated the moments of the fights that were the turning points of their matches in the wrestling ring, it delivered a very focused and historically rewarding campaign. At the time, MyCareer was a very basic mode compared to the later ones, but it was first established in this title.

It allowed players to take their created superstars through the WWE Performance Center weekly matches on NXT and the main roster, making branching choices that affected fan support and rivalries. The game received criticism for having stripped-back creation suites and limited match types at launch. However, its commitment to a more realistic pace and strategic combat was the vital groundwork of the subsequent, more fully featured and critically acclaimed WWE 2K games.
