GTA: Vice City beautifully trades the vast landscape of the future for a densely packed and stylized playground, where the gameplay is less about RPG progression and more about being the ultimate ’80s power fantasy of a rising criminal kingpin. As Tony Vercetti, you don’t just do the work; you turn it over to the strategic part of you and build a real estate empire that is your own, buying the most important properties all over the neon lit island: from an ugly pirate radio station to a flashy Malibu Club – each one of these giving you new missions which range from simply directing a B-movie stunt sequence to hijacking a bank in large numbers, thus, making you feel less like a hired thug and more like the boss of organized crime.

The action, as it flows from one event to another, is a lively, period-appropriate pastiche of such things as high-speed speedboat chases through neon-lit canals, frantic shootouts with rival gangs that are armed with era-specific weapons like the famous Python revolver, and the pure, simple, and absolute delight of flying a helicopter to spray paint over a competitor’s billboards.

The world, even, is a character by itself and this is proven by the fact that the soundtrack is more than a dozen different licensed radio stations that give the perfect score of every drive-by and the visual style that is a combination of art deco glamour and pastel soaked sunsets which is even able to make the most violent chaos to feel like a scene from a Michael Mann film.

It’s a game that completely grasps its tone and thus presents the player with a concentrated, fashionable, and very self-assured course from being an ex-betrayed nobody to becoming the sole master of a decadent and unforgettable city.
