WWE​‍​‌‍​‍‌ 2K22 was a triumphant return to the franchise that could have been a total loss, as it was completely rebuilt from scratch with a new game engine and with a totally revamped combat system, fast, more intuitive, and visually spectacular were the designers’ goals. The most notable change was the introduction of the “Fightful Combo” system, which abolished the traditional grapple-heavy mechanics in favor of a fluid chain of light, heavy, and grapple attacks that could be easily linked, thus making matches look more like the fast and furious brawls that the viewers see on TV. All this was accomplished by an entirely new set of controls that made the action more accessible without losing complexity.

The ground-breaking “Breaking Point” submission minigame and the tactical “Super Finisher” feature giving the matches new dramatic layers, whereas the completely rebuilt pin system—where the player is now asked to do a timing task rather than random mashing of buttons to kick out—directly put the match’s outcome under the player’s control, thereby producing an unprecedented feeling of agency and tension. Outside the ring, WWE 2K22 gave a colossal amount of content and creative freedom to the fans, the main attractions being the cinematic, rogue-lite “MyRISE” story modes for male and female superstars and the ground-breaking “MyGM” mode.

In MyGM, gamers were finally allowed to take the role of a brand manager where they could compete against a friend or AI by drafting superstars, booking weekly shows, handling budgets, and winning the ratings battle in the most realistic WWE management simulation ever created. The famous “Universe Mode” got more powerful with new cutscenes and rivalries, and the “Creation Suite” kept on being the industry leader, thus enabling extremely detailed custom superstars, arenas, and championships.
