Mafia 1 transports players into a 1930s American city that has been recreated with great attention to detail, a crime drama cinematic in nature, where the division between pulp fiction and historical truth is very thin, like the barrel of a Tommy gun. The gameplay is a slow, methodical immersion into the world of organized crime, where the player is Tommy Angelo, a simple taxi driver who, through a stagnant chance encounter, becomes part of the Salieri family and chooses to be loyal to the family. The core experience is about deep immersion and not arcade action: you are walking through the vast, authentic, period-looking city named Lost Heaven and taking out in the garage one of the very well restored period cars, from the very boxy and old Fords to the very sleek roadsters, each of them with the unique handling that forces the driver to respect the primitive suspension and tire grip of that era.

The missions are like the movie scenes, very nicely done, so instead of shooting in the street, you run from the hit quickly amidst the neon lights of downtown, or you have a shootout with the police in a dark and smoky speakeasy. The cover-based shooting system is also there to make the player not be Rambo, but a sharpshooter with a great sense of timing and patience. When you are back from the job, you have some free time to roam the city’s streets with their unique style and character, you can decide to do as the traffic signs say or not, and the police are very real and will fine you for speeding. You can dive into the era by listening to the local radio broadcasts and looking at the buildings.

The story is a very good example of the old rise-and-fall-based tragedy, with Tommy going from a mere immigrant to a trusted family servant through several wearing moral compromises and very harsh consequences. This slow pacing, historical accuracy, and the effort put into the creation of deep, character-driven drama have made Mafia the anti-Grand Theft Auto of crime games, a game where the bullets really hurt because the characters you are hitting actually matter.
