Assassin’s Creed Rogue changes the game’s storyline and mechanics from good to evil by making the main character Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin who turns into a Templar and becomes a ruthless hunter of his former Brotherhood fellows. Players are thus given a unique perspective that allows them to see the essence of the core mechanics as tools of systemic exploitation in the frozen North Atlantic and the crowded American colonies. Gameplay revolves around this ideological change; the once familiar eagle vision is turned into “Eagle Sense,” a hunter’s ability to track hidden Assassins through the surroundings, and the homestead is transformed into the Morrigan. This heavily armed ship acts as a mobile base for Shay’s brutal naval warfare against his former Brotherhood allies.

Shay must survive in this open-world wilderness, which is a dangerous and reactive hunting ground, by taking down the Assassin presence through methods such as breaking into their secret rooms, sabotaging their activities, and participating in engaging cat and mouse games where Shay becomes both the hunter and the hunted, as agile Assassins chase him using the same parkour and stealth tricks they used when they were under the player’s control.

The arsenal has been refined to deepen this experience with the inclusion of an air rifle that can deliver silent, stunning grenades, and a grenade launcher for causing tactical mayhem, and at the same time, the storyline connects the colonial history of the Kenways with the coming worldwide war referred to as Unity. Therefore, this sets up a very dark power fantasy where the player, by the use of the Brotherhood’s very own sacred doctrines, can identify and eventually master an environment in which every rooftop and riverway provides a chance as well as a potential death.
