Back in the day, people would hardly believe that the action-adventure game genre could be revolutionized by just one game. However, Assassin’s Creed 1 did revolutionize the genre in a way that today, most sequels in the franchise still follow the path laid out by the original. Social Stealth System was the first mechanism introduced in the game, and it was truly innovative. The players had to disappear into a dynamic crowd by blending with scholars the way a spy would blend with the locals, taking a reminder from their playbook, sitting on benches, or going out employing hired groups of vigilantes to mask their movements from the ever-vigilant Templar guards. The gameplay was based on the newly introduced Free-Running Parkour Mechanics, enabling smooth movement across the beautifully recreated medieval cities of Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus simply by pressing the “high profile” button. Altair could effortlessly climb walls, jump from one rooftop to another, and explore the complex city layouts at an unprecedented pace.

Core missions entailed a Three-Phase Investigation Loop: listening, pilfering, and interrogating to gather information that would lead to a successful assassination—handing tactical benefits, such as patrol routes or secret ways to enter the buildings, to the forward-thinking player only when the latter has patiently done the reconnaissance of the mission area. Combat was based on the Defensive Counter-Kill System, which emphasized that if one could time a precise counter followed by a hidden blade attack, they would instantly succeed in eliminating the enemy in a very stylish and cinematic way. In that sense, quality was more important than quantity in the fighting scenes.

The Memory Corridor Debriefings with Al Mualim and the Animus Interface Glitches gave the players an insight into the deeper meta-narrative, intended to be a big question in the game: reality vs. history. In this way, the developers set the tone for the rest of the franchise by mixing historical fiction with sci-fi conspiracy. The game thus served as a blueprint for a decade of sequels that introduced the DNA of a methodical, atmospheric experience where patience, observation, and precise execution were the keys to success.
