Prince​‍​‌‍​‍‌ of Persia 1 is a classic example of precision platforming, relying heavily on a pioneering rotoscoped animation system that gave the protagonist an extraordinary impression of mass, smoothness, and vulnerability in a treacherous fortress filled with traps. The game is basically a slow tempo, methodical trial of memory and timing, where the player is faced with an array of pressure plates, collapsible floors, blade traps, and deadly pits, making the player perfect their limited but very carefully chosen set of moves—such as sneaking, running, jumping, and grabbing a ledge to save their life—to navigate with pixel-perfect accuracy. The main source of the game’s challenge is the in-game time limit of one hour only, during which the player is stalked by the evil Vizier Jaffar, thus making it a very difficult task to escape and save the princess on time.

Players can fight in some very limited situations. Still, a sword fight is almost always a test of the player’s ability to position themselves properly and use the parry at the right time to defeat the enemy. Every time a little with the guard, a sparring partner, etc., takes on the player, it is always life-threatening because the prince is a very fragile character with only a few health points. By mixing very few resourceful, highly tensioned elements—a beautiful, smooth animation, a very harsh environmental puzzle system, and an extremely high-stakes game—this game has left a legacy for all the future cinematic platformers to ​‍​‌‍​‍‌come.
