Mafia 3 flips the classic gangster narrative on its head by setting players in the racially charged, volatile backstreets of 1968 New Bordeaux, a beautifully re-created New Orleans, where you wage a brutal, one-person war with the Italian mafia. Gameplay moves away from the linear, movie-like storytelling of the previous titles, and a giant, systemic open-world revenge simulator is created where you are Lincoln Clay, a decorated Vietnam soldier and orphan who returns home only to be betrayed and nearly killed by the local mob. The main action is a slow, very fulfilling loop of conquering territories and gathering secrets. You are not simply handed the targets; at first, you must break the criminal network bit by bit by making them reveal their racket leaders, collecting the evidence, and deciding how to get rid of them, by sneaking, direct fighting, or even bribing them to betray their bosses. Every time you defeat a lieutenant, the overall network, their income, and influence get weaker.

Besides, you get more missions and story breakthroughs. The game’s main “Racket System” is what underpins its tactics; you can go after the three main crime families in any order, and the decisions you make about each underboss, i.e., kill them, recruit them, or let them go, have an impact on the money flow and the support you get for the showdown. Fight scenes feature raw and fierce action where Lincoln’s learned skills are combined with impromptu street brawls. The main arsenal includes cover-based shooting, but it is when fighting in enclosed spaces and delivering fierce blows that the game is at its best.
