Call of Duty 3 (2006) grabbed fans of the franchise and threw them into the most intense moments of World War II, delivering a gritty, squad-driven, melee-focused combat experience that showcased the harshness of close-quarters warfare. The primary focus in the game campaign is the Normandy Breakout, the story intertwining various Allied perspectives. Thus, each mission becomes a dive into the American, British, Canadian, and Polish forces’ muddy fights that painted the liberation of France. In contrast to CoD 3, which replaced older games of this series and featured a better melee system, gamers were able to follow their frantic bayonet charges and toils in hand-to-hand fights with German soldiers, being more involved in the game atmosphere of life-or-death struggles.

The shooting is still very realistic, with the most famous WWII firearms such as the M1 Garand and MP40. Of course, you will have to use aimed shooting and short bursts of shots with the guns, and artillery barrages and tank assaults can bring an explosive, large-scale display. The game’s multiplayer mode, albeit limited to the capabilities of consoles at the time, not only allows but also sets a precedent for the future CoD games with its class-based combat system and objective-driven modes. Being filled with catharsis caused by the atmospheric sound effects and the honest depiction of the war’s madness, Call of Duty 3 represents an unfiltered homage to the soldiers who braved through the fog of war.
