FIFA 19’s gameplay was a perfect example of how to create true tension and, at the same time, reward the player’s footballing intelligence. Most of the success was based on the groundbreaking “Active Touch System,” which was not just an update in the animation of the game characters, but a complete conceptual shift in the game’s logic that brought doubt and beauty to the very first touch. The ball was no longer just an object but something that could be affected by the environment. It could bounce out of the way under the hands of a great striker who was heavily tackled, or it could be killed instantly by a midfielder who had the “Finesse” trait, making the ball a dangerous and valuable possession and not a given anymore.

This new approach to the game was also reflected in the “Dynamic Tactics” suite, where managing the team was no longer a static pre-match job but a live, chess-like duel. The managers were free to set up four different tactics for their teams with their own formation, mentality, and player instructions, and during the game, it was only a tap on the d-pad that allowed them to switch from one tactic to another and thus be able to react in real-time to their opponents. The match became a battle for survival.

Along with the player implementing the Strength and Aggression attributes in the 50/50 battles, their dogged fight was now reflected in the stats as well. The introduction of the “Timed Finishing” mechanic into the shooting skill meant that those who mastered the timing of the rhythmic shots and turning them into well-executed finesse breaks were able to do almost arcade-like shooting. While this was a major source of controversy, it was still only part of the whole concept.

FIFA 19 dosn’t feel like a mere video game anymore once these unpredictable ball physics, deep tactical customization, and physical battles that happen from one moment to the next are combined. It is this interplay that constitutes the core of the game, which makes it feel like a dynamic, authentic simulation of the beautiful game’s cerebral and chaotic heart.
