GTA: San Andreas gave the players seemingly unlimited freedom of choice in the way it turned the entire state of San Andreas into a living, breathing RPG where your character, Carl “CJ” Johnson, was not just another criminal but a fully customizable avatar with skills, looks, and reputation that were a direct result of every decision you took. The game is highly complex and is made up of numerous systems that are interconnected with each other: you have to keep the main stats of CJ at a certain level by going to the gym and working out to increase strength, eating to keep stamina at the required level (or else the character can become overweight and slow down), and even going to the closet to put on the right clothes for the respect of the gang you are in or for the admiration of your different girlfriends, each of them giving you distinct advantages.

Apart from well-known and much-loved gang war and heist missions, the world is now full of various types of emergent gameplay quizzes. You could be a firefighter who has taken the law into his own hands, a paramedic, a valet parking attendant, or a gambler who bets all his money on playing pool or in casino games. The vehicle sandbox that has been made is of the highest quality and cannot be matched by anyone, it allows you to make lowriders more eye-catching by adding features such as hydraulic hops for impromptu dance battles, you can also take a jetpack to do a chaotic aerial assault or hijack a train to slowly ride through the whole map while a dynamic gang warfare system is causing that your territory can change hands at any time without warning so what was supposed to be a boring ride across town now turns into the battle for survival.

It is this enormous complexity, where everything that you do influences your character and the environment, that creates an experience that is not very much like a neatly designed story, but is instead your own crazy and unique life in a strangely different version of the American dream.
