Prince​‍​‌‍​‍‌ of Persia: The Forgotten Sands follows up the acclaimed Sands of Time formula and goes even further to refine its core acrobatic platforming and time-manipulation mechanics; at the same time, it adds a range of elemental powers that change the Prince’s interaction not only with the environment but also with the enemy. The gameplay is based on the beautiful, smooth free-running of the original trilogy, which blessedly can be combined now with the possession of four elements that you can command: freezing water to make temporary ice platforms and pillars for your next jump, turning back time to restore broken parts of the buildings, throwing a wind blast to jump off over a chasm, and bringing up an earth shield to defend yourself.

These powers are much more than just combat trinkets; they are natural parts of the environmental puzzle layout where you have to freeze waterfalls to be able to climb them, rewind a collapsing bridge mid-leap, and control giant stone mechanisms to get to the palace of King Solomon, filled with traps and sprawling. Combat also develops with these elements, being able to freeze your opponents, break them with a heavy blow, or use a stream of water as a whip-like weapon, basically mixing up the strategic magic use together with the series’ famous swordplay.
