WWE 2K17 took the solid base of the previous game and its core wrestling experience, and it was the main focus to refine the physics to make the simulation deeper, more strategic and more impactful to the physical body of the wrestlers. The new gameplay introduced a “Weight Detection” system, which changed dramatically how the moves were executed and how they were sold depending on the size and the strength of the wrestler; a cruiserweight could no longer lift a super heavyweight as easily as before, and the impact of the slams was more realistic, and the consequences felt were more authentic.

The game featured an expanded “OMG!” moment system and the addition of new moves such as the “Top Rope Finishers” for the devastating, allowing for more spectacular and match-ending sequences, which in turn provided an even better experience for the fans as it was very similar to WWE’s television product. The foundation of the game, the momentum-based Payback system, core mechanics were all rebalanced and improved with the focus on giving back control to the player who can chain wrestling, execute timely reversals, and smartly manage his stamina, thus the one who overuses button-mashing will not win anymore.

In addition to the nicely tuned core combat, WWE 2K17 was loaded with content and customization options, with its huge roster and the most extensive creation suite ever made being the highlights. The main “2K Showcase” mode was moved from a single story to the “Austin 3:16” arc, but the “MyCareer” mode was the real shining feature as it now had promos; players had to choose one out of the several options of the dialogues in backstage interviews, and the choices they made affected crowd reaction, rivalries, and their superstars’ alignment.

The game also unveiled the “WWE Universe” story engine that could create dynamic and unpredictable rivalries and events.
